Edwardsville has an interesting history. From 1867 to 1906, it was the county seat for Cleburne County. This means it was the main town where the county government was located. In the late 1800s, specifically in 1880 and 1890, Edwardsville was the biggest community in the county. Its population reached its highest point in 1900 with 448 people. However, it then became smaller than Heflin, which also took over as the county seat six years later. Since 1920, Edwardsville's population has been less than 226 people.
