Edwin Dorn (born March 26, 1945) is an American expert in government and public service. He held important roles in the United States government and in education. From 1997 to 2004, he was the leader, or dean, of the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs. Before that, he worked for the United States Department of Defense, helping manage people in the military.

Early Life and Education
Edwin Dorn was born in Crockett, Texas. He finished high school at Jack Yates High School in Houston in 1963.
He went on to earn several college degrees.
- In 1967, he received a bachelor's degree in government from the University of Texas at Austin.
- In 1970, he earned a master's degree in political science from Indiana University Bloomington.
- In 1978, he completed his highest degree, a Ph.D., in political science from Yale University. His main research paper was about rules and fairness for different groups of people.
Edwin Dorn also studied in England for a year. He received a special scholarship called a Fulbright Fellowship to study in Birmingham from 1967 to 1968.
Career in Public Service
After getting his master's degree, Edwin Dorn served in the United States Army. He worked as an intelligence officer in West Germany from 1970 to 1972. After his military service, he began his advanced studies at Yale University.
Working in Government Agencies
In 1977, Dorn started working for the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. This department helped with health and education programs. In 1980, he moved to the United States Department of Education.
Later, in 1982, he joined the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies. Here, he was a senior researcher and helped lead research projects. In 1990, he became a senior staff member at The Brookings Institution. This is a well-known group that studies public policies.
High-Level Government Roles
In 1993, President Bill Clinton chose Edwin Dorn for an important job. He was nominated to be the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Force Management and Personnel. This role involved helping manage the people in the military.
In 1994, he was nominated for an even higher position. He became the first-ever Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness. In this role, he was a top leader responsible for military personnel and their readiness. He served in this position until 1997.
Leading at the University
After leaving government work, Edwin Dorn became the dean of the LBJ School of Public Affairs. This is a school at the University of Texas that teaches students about public policy. He led the school from 1997 to 2004. After his time as dean, he continued to teach as a professor at the school.
Personal Life
Edwin Dorn is the son of Edgar and Mary Dorn.
He married actress Franchella Nadine Stewart on August 1, 1970. They have three daughters. Franchelle Stewart Dorn is also a professor. She teaches acting at the University of Texas at Austin.
