The Story of Egan
Egan has a long history. The area was first settled during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Three brothers, M.J., J.P., and W.E. Miller, were among the first to live there.
In 1883, the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad extended its tracks through the area. A surveyor working for the railroad gave Egan its name. That same year, a post office was opened in the community.
By 1885, Egan was growing. It had about 50 residents, a general store, a school, and two churches. In the early 1900s, a winery was even started there. However, it closed during Prohibition, a time when alcohol was illegal.
The post office in Egan closed in 1930. The number of people living in Egan slowly went down after that. From its highest point of 115 residents in the mid-1920s, the population dropped to about 21 by the year 2000.
More recently, Egan was hit by a strong tornado on April 4, 2022. This tornado caused a lot of damage to the community. One person was hurt during the storm.
