The Story of Eggo Waffles
Eggo waffles were first created in 1953. An American inventor named Frank Dorsa came up with the idea. He found a way to cook, freeze, and package waffles for people to buy. The Dorsa brothers also made other products. These included Eggo potato chips and Eggo syrup.
All these products were made at a large factory. It was located on Eggo Way in San Jose, California. The Dorsa family was very active in their local community. They often gave money and support to schools and other projects. For Halloween, Tony Dorsa would even give out bags of Eggo potato chips to trick-or-treaters.
Eggo Joins Kellogg's
In 1968, the Kellogg Company bought Eggo. Kellogg's wanted to offer more types of products. They created a famous advertising slogan for Eggo. It was "L'eggo my Eggo." This slogan was developed by Leo Burnett Worldwide in 1972. It became well-known through their television commercials.
Later, Kellogg's worked with The Lego Group. They made Eggo waffles shaped like Lego bricks. This was because the word "leggo" sounded similar to "Lego."
Challenges and Comebacks
In the fall of 2009, there was a shortage of some Eggo products. This happened because of several issues. One factory in Atlanta had to close for a deep cleaning due to a health concern. There was also severe flooding in the Atlanta area. Plus, equipment at another Kellogg plant needed repairs.
Kellogg's also makes an Eggo brand breakfast cereal. This cereal is shaped like tiny waffles. It comes in flavors like maple syrup and cinnamon toast. The cereal was first made from 2006 to 2012. After many people asked for it, it was brought back in 2019.
Eggo in Pop Culture
In 2016, a popular Netflix show called Stranger Things featured Eggo waffles. They were a key part of the story. This brought the brand to attention around the world. In the show, Eggo waffles are the favorite food of the character Eleven. In 2020, Eggo won the Lausanne Index Prize. It was named "Best Product of the Year."
