The Story of Eggo Waffles
How Eggo Started
Eggo waffles were created in 1953 by an American inventor named Frank Dorsa. He figured out a way to cook waffles, then freeze them, and package them for people to buy. This made it easy for families to have waffles quickly at home.
The Dorsa brothers, who owned Eggo, also made other products. They produced Eggo potato chips and Eggo syrup. Their main factory was in San Jose, California. The Dorsa family was very involved in their local community. They often gave money and support to schools and other projects. For Halloween, instead of candy, Tony Dorsa would give out bags of Eggo potato chips to kids!
Joining the Kellogg Family
In 1968, the Kellogg Company bought Eggo. Kellogg's is a very big food company. They wanted to add new products to their lineup.
A famous advertising slogan for Eggo is "L'eggo my Eggo." This catchy phrase was created in 1972. You might have heard it in their television commercials.
Fun Collaborations and Challenges
Later, in the 2000s, Kellogg's worked with The Lego Group. They made special Eggo waffles shaped like Lego bricks! This was a fun idea because the name "Eggo" sounds a bit like "Lego."
In 2009, there was a time when it was hard to find some Eggo products. This happened because of a few problems. One factory needed special cleaning, and there was also some heavy flooding in the area. Equipment at another plant also needed repairs. These issues caused a temporary shortage of waffles.
Eggo Beyond Waffles
Kellogg's also makes an Eggo brand breakfast cereal. This cereal is shaped like tiny waffles. It comes in flavors like maple syrup and cinnamon toast. The cereal was first made from 2006 to 2012. After many people asked for it, it was brought back in 2019.
In 2016, Eggo became even more famous worldwide. This was thanks to the Netflix show Stranger Things. In the show, Eggo waffles are the favorite food of the character Eleven. This made the brand known to many new fans around the globe. In 2020, Eggo even won an award called the Lausanne Index Prize for Best Product of the Year.
