Eilean na Cille (pronounced "AY-lan na KIL-leh") is a small island in Scotland's beautiful Outer Hebrides. It's located southeast of Benbecula and is quite unique because it's connected to another island, Grimsay (South), by a special road called a causeway. This causeway makes it easy to reach Eilean na Cille by car, as it carries the B891 road.
Exploring Eilean na Cille
Eilean na Cille is part of the Uist and Barra island group. Even though it's connected by a road, it's a very quiet place.
The Causeway Connection
The causeway linking Eilean na Cille to Grimsay (South) is an important part of the island's story. It allows people to travel easily between the two islands.
Peter's Port Pier
On Eilean na Cille, you'll find Peter's Port, which has a pier. A pier is like a small dock where boats can tie up. This pier was built a long time ago in 1896 and cost about £2,000. While it's there for boats, the area around it can be tricky for ships. It's always best for boat captains to know the local waters very well before trying to use this pier.
An Uninhabited Island
Even though Eilean na Cille is connected to other islands by a road, it doesn't have any people living there permanently. According to official counts from 2001 and 2011, no one usually lives on the island. This means it's a peaceful spot, often visited by nature lovers or those exploring the Outer Hebrides.
