El Nido is a small community in Merced County, California. Its name means "The Nest" in Spanish. It is about 11 miles south of the city of Merced. El Nido sits at an elevation of 141 feet (43 meters) and is located along California State Route 59. In 2020, about 331 people lived there.

A Look at El Nido's Past
El Nido started in the early 1900s. This happened when new ways to bring water to farms, called irrigation, helped grow more crops. The name "El Nido" comes from an old Spanish land grant called Rancho Chowchilla. A land grant is like a gift of land from the government.
Building the Community
The El Nido School District began in 1914. A school building was finished in 1915. The El Nido Irrigation District was set up in 1928. It started providing water for farms in 1932. Cotton was a very important crop in the area. A large building called a cotton gin was built in 1937 to process the cotton.
El Nido During World War II
From 1942 to 1945, the US Army used the Potter Auxiliary Field in El Nido. This field helped train pilots during World War II.
