A Look at Eldridge's History
The city of Eldridge is named after Jacob M. Eldridge. He arrived in central Scott County in 1846. He bought land for a very low price at the time, just $1.25 per acre.
Soon after, many immigrants from Germany came to the area. This helped northern Scott County slowly start to grow. Railroads were built in the 1860s, bringing even more settlers.
Eldridge Junction was officially started on July 2, 1871. It was built on land that Jacob Eldridge had given. Soon, a post office and a Presbyterian church were also built.
Eldridge faced some tough times in its early years. In the 1880s, the railroad had money problems and was moved. A few years later, a smallpox sickness made the city feel very isolated.
In 1904, a big fire caused a lot of damage to the city's business area. Then, in 1918, a strong tornado hit. It damaged or destroyed many homes and the church, and sadly, three people lost their lives.
But each time, the city worked hard to recover. Eldridge remained an important farming community. It was a center for shipping grain and livestock.
The city's population started to grow more in the 1950s. This growth began with the creation of the Scott County Library System in 1950. This system created a network of libraries for smaller towns nearby.
In 1956, the North Scott Community School District was formed. By the late 1960s, more than 1,000 people lived in Eldridge. The city kept growing by creating new industrial parks to bring in businesses.
