Eleanor Roberta Ettles was born in Inverness, Scotland, on 23 July 1951. Her parents were Roberta and William Ettles. She went to school at Bearsden Academy. After that, she studied medicine at the University of Glasgow. She earned her medical degree in 1974.
Her Work as a Doctor
Eleanor Scott worked as a community paediatrician (a doctor who treats children). She worked in Inverness from 1980 to 1987. Then, she worked in Ross and Cromarty from 1987 to 2003. In this role, she helped children with special needs in the Scottish Highlands. She made sure they received the care they needed.
Getting Involved in Politics
Eleanor Scott joined the Scottish Green Party in 1989. Since then, she has worked hard on many important issues. She has spoken out against building new incinerators (places that burn waste). She also campaigned against GM crops in the Black Isle area. She was also part of the movement against war in Iraq.
In 1999, the Scottish Green Party chose her to be a candidate for the Highlands and Islands region. However, the party did not win a seat there that year. She also tried to become a Member of the European Parliament in 1999. Again, the party did not win any seats. She ran for the UK Parliament in 2001 and 2010 but was not elected.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
Eleanor Scott was elected to the Scottish Parliament in 2003. The Scottish Green Party won a seat in the Highlands and Islands region. Her partner, Rob Gibson, also became an MSP in 2003. He was part of the Scottish National Party. Eleanor Scott took her oath as an MSP in Scottish Gaelic. This showed her love for the language. She became the party's spokesperson for health. From June 2005, she also spoke for the party on rural development.
She ran for election again in 2007 but was not re-elected.
Leading the Green Party
In September 2008, Eleanor Scott became a co-leader of the Scottish Green Party. She shared this role with Patrick Harvie. She held this important position until 2011.
For the 2011 election, she was again a top candidate for the Highlands and Islands. But the Green Party did not win a seat in that region. The next year, she took part in meetings about the 2014 Scottish independence referendum. This referendum was a vote on whether Scotland should become an independent country.
