Elena Gheorghe (born July 30, 1985) is a famous Romanian singer. She started her music journey in the early 2000s. She was part of a popular Romanian pop group called Mandinga. With them, she released two albums. In 2006, Elena decided to leave the group. She then started her own solo career. Since then, she has released several successful albums. Her first solo song, "Vocea Ta," became a top ten hit in Romania.

Early Life and First Steps in Music

Elena Gheorghe was born in Bucharest, Romania. Her father was a priest. Many people in her family were also Orthodox priests. She has a sister named Ana, who is a journalist. Her brother, Costin, used to be a football player. Elena's mother, Mărioara Gheorghe, is a folk artist.

Elena started singing folk music when she was only three years old. Her first song was Sus în Deal în Poieniţă. When she was 11, she joined the Children's National Palace. There, she took singing lessons to improve her voice. In 2000, she won a gold trophy called Little Bear. She won it in Baia Mare for singing One Moment In Time by Whitney Houston. In 2001, she also took part in the Mamaia Festival. Elena has both Romanian and Aromanian family roots.

Elena's Music Career

Singing with Mandinga (2002–2005)

Elena Gheorghe began singing with Mandinga in early 2003. This band was very popular for its Latino music style. In June 2003, Mandinga released their first album, ...De Corazón.

In March 2005, Mandinga took part in the Romanian Eurovision selection. Their song My Sun came in 4th place. This song later earned a golden disc. This means it sold a lot of copies! In January 2006, Elena opened her own dance school called Passitos. A month later, she left Mandinga. She then started her solo career with the help of music producer Laurenţiu Duţă.

Starting Her Solo Career (2006–2008)

In June 2006, Elena released her first solo album. It was called Your Voice. In March 2007, she won an award from Radio România Actualitaţi. She was named the best performing artist of 2006. Her song "Your Voice" was also nominated for Best Song of 2006.

In August 2007, Elena won another award. At the Romanian Top Hit Music Awards, her song Your Brown Eyes was named Best Song of 2007. Some of Elena's songs are sung in the Aromanian language. These include "Ma ţi s-adar" and "Lilicea Vreariei". In 2007, she released her second solo album, Te Ador. The main song from this album also became a hit.

Eurovision Song Contest (2009)

In late 2008, Elena was given a song by Laurenţiu Duţă. This song was for the Romanian selection for the Eurovision Song Contest. On December 31, 2008, it was announced that Elena was one of the singers chosen. She competed in the semi-final and then reached the National Final on January 31, 2009.

In the final, she came second in the public vote. But the jury helped her win the selection! This meant she would represent Romania in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009. Her song was called "The Balkan Girls". She then went on a tour across Europe to promote her song.

Elena performed her song in the first semi-final on May 12 in Moscow. She finished ninth with 67 points. This allowed her to move on to the Grand Final on May 16. In the final, she was the 22nd performer. Elena put on a special show about wooden fairies called Iele from Romania. She finished 19th that night with 40 points. She received 12 points from Moldova and seven from Spain.

Becoming Known in Europe (2010–2012)

After Eurovision, Elena became more famous across Europe. She released her song "Disco Romancing." This song was a huge hit in Romania. It also reached the top ten in Hungary. It was also quite popular in the Czech Republic, Netherlands, Poland, and Slovakia.

Her next song, "Midnight Sun," was also a top ten hit. It did well in the Dutch Top 40 and the Romanian Top 100. In the same year, she went on her first European tour. She performed in Germany, Spain, and Greece. Elena's album "Disco Romancing" was released in 2012. It was available in Spain and Japan. This album also had three more songs released as singles: "Your Captain Tonight," "Amar Tu Vida," and "Hypnotic."

Recent Years (2013–Present)

In 2016, Disney Enterprises and Walt Disney Romania chose Elena. She became part of an animated TV series produced by Disney. She sings the main theme song for the show Elena of Avalor.

In 2019, Elena organized a special music event. This was to celebrate the Aromanian National Day. This day is celebrated every May 23. In March 2022, she released a new song. It is called "Brațele."
