Eleoniscus helenae is a very special type of woodlouse. Woodlice are small crustaceans that live on land, often found under rocks or logs. This particular woodlouse is the only known species in its genus called Eleoniscus.

What makes Eleoniscus helenae so unique is that it is endemic to a specific area. This means it is found naturally in only one place in the world! For Eleoniscus helenae, that place is the Alicante province in Spain. It has only ever been found in two caves there.

A Tiny Creature of the Caves

Eleoniscus helenae is a small, land-dwelling crustacean. It belongs to the group of animals called Isopoda, which includes all woodlice. Unlike many crustaceans that live in water, woodlice have adapted to live on land. They breathe using special gills that need to stay moist, which is why you often find them in damp, dark places like under rocks, logs, or in caves.

Where Does Eleoniscus Helenae Live?

This unique woodlouse lives deep inside caves. So far, scientists have only found Eleoniscus helenae in two caves located in the Alicante province of Spain. These caves provide the perfect cool, dark, and damp environment that woodlice need to survive.

Why is Eleoniscus Helenae So Special?

Eleoniscus helenae is considered a very important species because it is the only one in its entire genus, Eleoniscus. This makes it a monotypic genus, meaning it's the only living member of its group. Finding a species that is the sole representative of its genus is quite rare and exciting for scientists!

Its limited habitat also makes it special. Being found in only two caves in one province means it's a very rare creature.

Facing Challenges: Protecting its Home

Unfortunately, the future of Eleoniscus helenae is uncertain. One of the two caves where it was first discovered might no longer be home to this woodlouse. This is because of increasing urbanization (the growth of cities and towns) around the Macizo de Montgó area, where the caves are located.

Urbanization can lead to changes in the environment, like pollution or changes in water flow, which can harm delicate cave ecosystems. Protecting these natural habitats is very important to ensure that unique species like Eleoniscus helenae can continue to survive. Scientists and conservationists work hard to understand and protect these special places and the creatures that live in them.
