Elfrida Andrée

Elfrida Andrée (born February 19, 1841 – died January 11, 1929) was a talented Swedish musician. She was an organist, a composer (someone who writes music), and a conductor (someone who leads an orchestra or choir). She was a very important person in music history.

Life and Career

Early Life and Education

Elfrida Andrée was born in Visby, a city in Sweden. Her father, Andreas Andrée, was a doctor. She learned music from famous teachers like Ludvig Norman and Niels Wilhelm Gade. Her sister, Fredrika Stenhammar, was also a well-known singer.

Breaking Barriers in Music

Elfrida was a strong supporter of the women's movement in Sweden. This means she worked hard to make sure women had the same chances as men. Because of her efforts, she became one of the very first women in Scandinavia to be officially hired as an organist. This was a big step for women in music!

She started her first job in Stockholm in 1861. Later, in 1867, she became the organist at the big Gothenburg Cathedral. This was a very important position. Her amazing work led to her being chosen for the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. This is a special group that honors the best musicians and composers in Sweden. Elfrida Andrée passed away in Gothenburg.

Musical Works

Compositions for Orchestra and Organ

Elfrida Andrée wrote many different kinds of music. Her two organ symphonies are still played today. A symphony is a long piece of music for an orchestra. She also wrote other pieces for a full orchestra, including two more symphonies.

Chamber Music and Other Works

She composed many pieces for smaller groups of instruments, known as chamber music. These include a piano quartet (for piano and three other instruments) and a piano quintet (for piano and four other instruments). She also wrote a piano trio and two string quartets. These are pieces for groups of string instruments.

Elfrida also wrote music for violin and for piano. She composed two Swedish masses, which are musical pieces for church services. In 1879, she wrote a choral song called "Snöfrid." She also wrote lieder, which are German songs for a singer and piano.
