Elgin is located along the Babocomari River. This river is special because it's home to a very rare type of fish. Not much is known about these unique fish. The entire area of Elgin covers about 15.4 square kilometers (about 5.9 square miles) of land.

Elgin has been a popular spot for filming movies, especially old Westerns! Its natural scenery and historic train station made it a great setting.
- Red River (1948) - This famous movie, starring John Wayne, filmed many of its cattle drive scenes in Elgin.
- Oklahoma! (1955) - The train station part of this musical, where Gene Nelson sings "Kansas City," was filmed right here in Elgin.
- 3:10 to Yuma (1957) - The train scenes in this Western, featuring Glenn Ford, were also shot in Elgin.
- The Sons of Katie Elder (1965) - Another movie with John Wayne, this one used the same train station as Oklahoma! for its opening scene.
Winemaking in Elgin
Elgin is famous for being the first place in Arizona to start making wine on a large scale.
In the 1970s, a scientist named Gordon Dutt noticed that the soil in the Elgin-Sonoita area was very similar to the soil in Burgundy, France, which is famous for its wines. He teamed up with A. Blake Brophy to start an experimental winery. This winery later became Sonoita Vineyards.
This success encouraged other vineyards to open in the area. Today, local growers produce many types of grapes, like Chardonnay, Merlot, and Syrah. In 2009, there were nine vineyards in the region, making about 50,000 gallons of wine each year!
Elgin also hosts fun wine festivals throughout the year, including the St. Martin's Day festival. The growth of winemaking has helped bring new restaurants and bed and breakfasts to the area, boosting the local economy.
