Meet Eline Berings

Her Early Career as a Junior Athlete

Eline Berings was born in Ghent, a city in Belgium. She started her athletics journey as a young junior athlete.

In 2003, when she was still quite young, Eline competed in the World Youth Championships. She showed great promise by finishing seventh in her event. The next year, in 2004, she took part in the World Junior Championships. She gained valuable experience there, even though she did not reach the final.

Her hard work paid off in 2005. Eline won a gold medal at the European Junior Championships. This was a huge achievement for her. In July 2005, she set her personal best time as a junior. She ran the 100-meter hurdles in 13.39 seconds in Oordegem, Belgium.

Her Exciting Senior Career

Eline continued to improve as she moved into her senior career. In the winter of 2005-2006, she made big progress in the 60-meter hurdles. She lowered her personal best time from 8.48 seconds to 8.17 seconds. This happened at a competition in Ghent in February.

In the summer of 2006, Eline competed in the European Championships. She ran the 100-meter hurdles in 13.42 seconds in the first round. This time was not enough for her to move on to the next stage. Earlier that May, she had set a new personal best of 13.27 seconds in Oordegem.

During the indoor season of 2006-2007, Eline ran the 60-meter hurdles in 8.07 seconds in February. A few weeks later, she competed at the European Indoor Championships. She ran the same time in the early races. For the first time, she reached the final in a major senior championship. She finished in eighth place, which was a great step forward.

In the summer of 2007, Eline competed at the World Championships. She did not make it past the first round. However, she set a new personal best time of 12.97 seconds. This showed she was getting faster and stronger.

Big Wins and New Records

Eline's next big event was the World Indoor Championships in 2008. She set another personal best time of 8.05 seconds in the first races. But in the semi-final, she ran 8.10 seconds and did not qualify for the final. That summer, her best time was 13.09 seconds in July in Heusden-Zolder.

In the indoor season of 2008-2009, Eline returned to her best form. She competed at the European Indoor Championships in 2009. She ran 8.00 seconds in the heats and 8.01 seconds in the semi-final. Then, in the final, she won the gold medal! She beat other strong athletes like Lucie Škrobáková and Derval O'Rourke. Her winning time was 7.92 seconds, which was a new national indoor record for Belgium.

In 2010, Eline reached the semi-finals of the 60-meter hurdles at the World Indoor Championships. Later that year, she competed at the European Athletics Championships. However, she did not make it past the first round there.

Overcoming Challenges

Eline faced some tough challenges in 2011. A knee injury and a serious muscle tear in her thigh stopped her season early. Because of these injuries, she could not defend her European indoor title.

Despite the setbacks, Eline kept working hard. She competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the 100-meter hurdles. She showed her strength by reaching the semi-finals at this huge global event.

In 2014, Eline competed at the European Championships again. She made it to the final and finished in eighth place. This was another great achievement in her career.
