The Elisa's leaf-toed gecko (also called Asaccus elisae) is a type of gecko. Geckos are small lizards. This gecko belongs to a family called Phyllodactylidae. You can find it living in the Middle East. It is also known as Werner's leaf-toed gecko.

What's in a Name?

The name elisae was given to honor a woman or girl named Elisa. We don't know for sure who she was. The scientist Franz Werner named this gecko in 1895.

Where Does it Live?

The Elisa's leaf-toed gecko lives in several countries. You can find it in southern Turkey, especially near the Euphrates River. It also lives in eastern Syria, eastern and northern Iraq, and western Iran.

Its Home and Habitat

This gecko prefers to live in rocky places. These areas usually have very few plants. It can be found at heights between 150 to 1,000 meters (about 490 to 3,280 feet) above sea level. Sometimes, these geckos are found in caves. They have also been seen living in old buildings and ruins in Iran.

What Does it Look Like?

The Elisa's leaf-toed gecko is a small lizard. Its body, from its snout to the base of its tail, can be about 5.7 centimeters (2.2 inches) long. It has bumpy skin on its back. These bumps are called tubercles and they are quite rough. Its tail is thin and is longer than its body.

Reproduction

The Elisa's leaf-toed gecko lays eggs. This means it is an oviparous animal. Each female gecko lays at least two groups of eggs every year. Each group, called a clutch, usually has one or two eggs.
