Before this, she served as the President of the Senate of the Republic from 2018 to 2022. She made history as the first woman to hold this important position.

Casellati is a long-time member of the political party Forza Italia. She has also worked as an Undersecretary for Health and Justice in earlier governments. In 2022, she was suggested as a candidate for President of Italy.

Elisabetta Casellati was born in Rovigo, Italy, in 1946. Her parents were from a noble family in Calabria. Her father was a partisan, which means he was part of a group fighting against an occupying power during World War II.
