Eliseo Verón (born June 12, 1935 – died April 15, 2014) was an important thinker from Argentina. He was a sociologist, an anthropologist, and a semiotician. These are all fields that study how people behave and communicate in society.

Verón was also a professor who taught about communication at the Universidad de San Andrés. His ideas and writings are very well-known in countries where people speak Spanish and French.

Eliseo Verón's Academic Journey

Early Life and Education

Eliseo Verón was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He started teaching philosophy and sociology at the university in 1957, even while he was still a student! In 1960, he earned his degree in philosophy from that same university.

After graduating, Verón received a special scholarship. This allowed him to study social anthropology in France. He worked with a famous anthropologist named Claude Lévi-Strauss at the Collège de France.

Discovering New Ideas

Verón helped translate one of Lévi-Strauss's important books, Structural Anthropology, into Spanish in 1961. He said that Lévi-Strauss was a big influence on him during this time.

In 1962, Verón attended a seminar by Roland Barthes. There, he learned about Saussurian semiotics. Semiotics is the study of signs and symbols and how they create meaning. This new idea became very important for all his future work.

Teaching and Research in Argentina

When Verón returned to Argentina, he became a professor at the University of Buenos Aires. He also directed the Center for Social Research at the Torcuato di Tella Institute in 1967 and 1968.

He taught Social Psychology at the Universidad Nacional del Litoral and sociology at the University of Salvador. In 1970, he received a special award called the Guggenheim Fellowship.

Life and Work in France

During the 1970s, Verón moved to France and lived there until 1995. He taught at several universities in France, including Paris and Bordeaux. In 1985, he earned his Doctor of State degree from the University of Paris VIII. He was also a professor at the Sorbonne from 1987 to 1992.

Returning to Argentina

In 1995, Eliseo Verón came back to Argentina. He led a special program for advanced students in communication sciences at the Universidad Hebrea Argentina Bar Illán. He also taught communication at other universities, like the Universidad Nacional de Rosario and the University of San Andrés.

From 2000 to 2006, he directed a Master of Journalism program. This was a joint project with the Clarín Group and Columbia University.

Verón's Theories and Publications

Eliseo Verón started publishing books about sociology, social psychology, communication, and semiotics in 1968. Early on, his ideas were shaped by Lévi-Strauss's structuralism and Saussure's theory of signs.

Later, he was influenced by Charles Sanders Peirce and his idea of a "triadic sign." Verón used this to develop his own theory called "social semiosis" in 1988. This theory helps us understand how meaning is created and shared in society.

In 1974, he started a journal called LENGUAjes in Buenos Aires. This journal was important because it officially introduced the study of semiotics to Argentina. Verón was also the president of the Argentine Association of Semiotics from 1970 to 1978.

Political Involvement

In December 2010, Eliseo Verón gave a speech to support Eduardo Duhalde. Duhalde was running for president of Argentina in 2011. This shows Verón's interest in public life.

Passing Away

Eliseo Verón passed away from cancer on April 15, 2014. He died at his home in Buenos Aires.
