Elizabeth Grove is a suburb located in the northern part of Adelaide, South Australia. It sits on the western side of Main North Road, just south of the main Elizabeth area. This suburb is bordered by Main North Road, Hogarth Road, Harvey Road, and Ridley Road. It's a busy place with a local shopping center, both public and Catholic primary schools, and several churches.
A Look Back: Elizabeth Grove's History
Elizabeth Grove was created in 1955. It was one of the first suburbs built in what was then a brand-new "satellite city" called Elizabeth. A satellite city is like a smaller city built near a larger one, designed to help people live and work there.
Early Days and Land Division
The land for Elizabeth Grove was originally divided up by private owners. This area included not only the current suburb but also parts of nearby Elizabeth South and Elizabeth Vale. It was a big project to turn these sections of land into homes and community spaces.
The Community Church and Its Role
A very important building in Elizabeth Grove's history is the Elizabeth Grove Methodist Church. Its first stone was laid on November 27, 1956. This happened less than two weeks after the entire city of Elizabeth was officially opened! The stone was laid by Thomas Playford, who was the Premier (like the leader or governor) of South Australia at the time.
This church building was more than just a place of worship. It also served as a community hall where many different activities took place. It even had tennis courts, which became the first home courts for the Elizabeth Tennis Club. Today, this historic building is recognized for its importance and has been expanded over the years.
