Elizabeth Nelson Adams (born January 22, 1941 – died March 2, 2020) was an American artist, poet, and writer. She was born in Columbia, South Carolina. She also worked as an arts commissioner and helped with casting for movies.

About Elizabeth Nelson Adams
Elizabeth Adams was a very smart student. She won a special scholarship from The National Merit Scholarship Program. This helped her go to The University of South Carolina. She earned her first degree there in 1961.
Later, she went back to the same university. She earned a Master's degree in English in 1987. Then, she got her PhD in creative writing in 1989. She was married to Ambassador Weston Adams (diplomat). An ambassador is a person who represents their country in another country. Elizabeth and Weston had four children together.
From 1995 to 2000, Elizabeth Adams served on the South Carolina Arts Commission. This group helps support art and artists in South Carolina. She also served on the Board of Directors for The South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts & Humanities. This is a special school for talented young artists.
Her Work as a Writer and Artist
Elizabeth Adams wrote many poems and books. She wrote Gathering the Rain in 1990. She also wrote Five Malawian Writers: An Essay in Personal Exploration in 1987.
She was also a very good painter. Her art was shown in many places. These included different cities in South Carolina, Los Angeles, and even Lilongwe, Malawi in Africa.
In 2007 and 2009, she had art shows in Los Angeles. These shows helped raise money for Tippi Hedren’s Shambala Preserve. Shambala is a special place that takes care of big cats. These include lions, tigers, and leopards.
Art Inspired by Africa and Italy
Between 1984 and 1986, Elizabeth Adams lived in Malawi, Africa. She spent her time there painting and writing. Her paintings showed the beautiful landscapes and people of Malawi. During this time, she wrote her book about Malawian writers.
She traveled a lot through Malawi, from Lilongwe to Lake Malawi. Her trips to other African countries also inspired her art. These countries included Zambia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.
In the 1990s, she became very interested in Lithography. This is a special way of making prints. You can see this in her series of Italian lithographs. She traveled all over Italy. She painted and created prints of Italy's buildings, landscapes, and people.
Her art was also shown at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival. This is part of The Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, South Carolina. Her poems were published in many poetry books across the United States.
Working in Film
Elizabeth Adams played a big part in making the movie The Last Confederate: The Story of Robert Adams. This film came out in 2007. She knew a lot about Southern history and culture. This helped make the movie's story, casting, and look very accurate.
She was the casting director for the movie. This means she helped choose the actors. She brought in famous actors like Tippi Hedren. Tippi Hedren played Grandmother Adams in the film. She also brought in the singer Edwin McCain, who played Belcher. Elizabeth Adams herself also acted in the movie. She played the role of Madame Bonneau.
