Ellen Osiier: The First Woman Fencing Champion
The 1924 Summer Olympics were held in Paris, France. These games were very special because they were the first Olympics to include fencing for women. Ellen Osiier, who was 33 years old at the time, made history there.
She won the gold medal in the individual foil event. What's even more amazing is that she didn't lose a single one of her 16 matches! With this incredible win, Ellen Osiier became the very first woman fencing champion in the history of the Olympic Games.
Her Fencing Family
Ellen's husband, Ivan Osiier, was also a very talented fencer. He competed in the Olympics seven times! Ivan won a silver medal for Denmark in the individual épée event at the 1912 Olympics. An épée is another type of sword used in fencing, heavier than a foil.
Ivan Osiier also won 25 Danish national championships. He was a champion in three different fencing weapons. This shows that fencing was a big part of their family life.
