Ellenton is a small community in Manatee County, Florida, United States. It's called a "census-designated place" (CDP) because it's a specific area the government tracks for population, but it doesn't have its own city government. In 2020, about 4,129 people lived there. Ellenton is part of a larger area that includes the cities of North Port, Bradenton, and Sarasota.

History of Ellenton

Early Days and the Gamble Plantation

The oldest building in Ellenton is the Gamble Plantation. It was built between 1845 and 1850 by a person named Major Robert Gamble. This large house was part of a sugar farm where many people were forced to work. After the Civil War, the mansion became old and worn out.

In 1870, Major George Patten and his wife, Mary, bought the property. They decided to name the whole area "Ellenton" after their daughter, Ellen. A few years later, in 1881, the United States government officially recognized Ellenton as a place with its own post office.

The Fuller's Earth Plant

In 1903, a special factory opened in Ellenton along the Manatee River. This factory processed something called "fuller's earth." Fuller's earth is a type of clay used to clean and absorb oil and grease. The factory was owned by the Atlantic Refining Company and was quite large, employing over 150 people.

However, this factory had some bad luck with fires. It burned down in 1908, then again in 1912. Finally, in 1922, it caught fire one last time and was closed for good.
