The Banana Moment at the 2020 Australian Open

On January 19, 2020, Elliot Benchetrit was playing in the qualifying rounds for the 2020 Australian Open. He was 21 years old at the time. He asked a teenage ball girl to get him a banana. When she gave him the banana, Elliot told her he couldn't peel it himself. He explained that his fingers were "heavily taped" because of blisters. He also had put cream on his hands to stop them from sweating. So, he asked the ball girl to peel the banana for him.

The chair umpire stepped in and told Elliot he had to peel the banana himself. According to Elliot, the umpire also said that the ball girl "was not his slave." Elliot went on to win that match and qualified for the main tournament. He lost in the first round of the main event. This incident caused a lot of discussion on social media and among tennis fans. People debated the role of ball girls and ball boys. Elliot later said he was surprised by the umpire's comment and the reaction on social media. He felt people reacted "without knowing what really happened."
