The Banana Moment at the Australian Open
In January 2020, something unusual happened during a match at the 2020 Australian Open. Elliot Benchetrit, who was 21 years old, asked a teenage ball girl for a banana. When she handed it to him, he asked her to peel it. He explained that his fingers were heavily taped because of blisters. He also had cream on his hands to stop them from sweating.
The chair umpire stepped in and told Elliot he had to peel the banana himself. The umpire reportedly said that the ball girl was "not his slave." This moment caused a lot of discussion online and among tennis fans. People debated the roles of ball kids in tennis. Elliot later said he was surprised by the umpire's comment and the reaction on social media. He felt people didn't know the full story.
