Ellisburg is a small village in Jefferson County, New York, United States. In 2010, about 244 people lived there. The village got its name from two brothers who first owned the land. It is located in the middle of the town of Ellisburg, southwest of Watertown.
History
The village of Ellisburg was first settled around 1797. A person named Lyman Ellis was one of the first settlers. The village was also known as "Ellisburgh" back then. In 1895, Ellisburg officially became its own village, separate from the larger town.
Geography
Ellisburg is found in the southern part of Jefferson County. Its exact location is 43°43′54″N 76°8′1″W / 43.73167°N 76.13361°W. The village covers an area of about 1.0 square mile (2.6 km2), and all of it is land.
The South Sandy Creek flows right through the middle of the village. This creek eventually leads southwest to Lake Ontario.
Ellisburg is a meeting point for several roads. These include New York State Route 193, New York State Route 289, and County Road 87.
- NY-193 goes about 4 miles (6 km) east to Pierrepont Manor. It also goes the same distance northwest to NY-3 near Southwick Beach State Park by Lake Ontario.
- NY-289 goes north about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) to Belleville.
- Interstate 81 is about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) east of Ellisburg, which you can reach using NY-193. From there, it's another 20 miles (32 km) north to Watertown, which is the main city of the county.
