History of Ellsworth
Early Settlers and the Town's Beginning
Ellsworth is in Grand Prairie Township. People started settling here as early as 1871. One of the first settlers was known as "Uncle" Stillwell. He claimed the land where Ellsworth is now.
Mr. Stillwell opened a small store on his farm. He sold supplies to local farmers. He also traveled around with a wagon, selling goods. Stillwell believed a town would one day grow on his land. He left the area two years before Ellsworth was officially started in 1884. The main part of Ellsworth is now less than half a mile from where his cabin used to be.
How Ellsworth Became a Railroad Town
The town of Ellsworth was named after Eugene Ellsworth from Cedar Falls, Iowa. It began in the summer of 1884 when the Burlington Railroad was being built. Agents from a land company chose the spot for the new town.
The land was surveyed in September 1884. The first building in town was a saloon, finished in September 1884. Many other buildings started being built at the same time. By the end of that year, about 150 people lived in the new, growing town. The Ellsworth post office opened during the winter of 1884–85.
In 1886, the Burlington railroad chose Ellsworth as a major stop. The company built a large roundhouse for trains. They also added a turntable and a strong train station. A new train line was built from Ellsworth to Rock Rapids, Iowa.
Ellsworth Becomes an Official City
Ellsworth officially became a city on December 10, 1886. An election was held on January 13, 1887, and the city government started in February. In 1890, Ellsworth had a population of 258 people. By 2000, the population grew to 540.
