Railroad Days
In the 1800s and early 1900s, Elmira was a very important stop for trains. It was the main place where trains stopped between the towns of Fairfield and Davis. If people wanted to go to Vacaville, they had to take a special train line that started from Elmira.
Changes in Transportation
Later, a big road called U.S. Route 40 was built. This new road went directly through Vacaville. Because of this, more people started moving to Vacaville, and its population grew a lot. At the same time, the population of Elmira began to get smaller.
