Elsay Lake is a beautiful lake located about 15 kilometers (9 miles) northeast of the City of North Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada. You can find it near the center of Mount Seymour Provincial Park in the District of North Vancouver.
The lake was originally called Mystery Lake, and some people still know it by that name. Later, it was renamed Elsay Lake, likely after a nearby stream called Elsay Creek. This name probably came from a Scottish settler, perhaps from a place in Scotland.
Hiking to Elsay Lake
The Elsay Lake Trail
The easiest way to reach Elsay Lake is by hiking the Elsay Lake Trail. This trail takes you to the east side of Mount Seymour and Mount Elsay. It is a rugged trail, meaning it can be rough and challenging, but it is usually well-marked.
Most people who are reasonably fit and have some hiking experience can complete this trail. It typically takes about four to six hours to hike one way to the lake.
Important Safety Tips
There are also other trails that lead to Elsay Lake, but these are not official paths. They are much more difficult and can be very dangerous. Many hikers have gotten lost or needed rescue on these unofficial routes.
It is very important to know the area well and be fully prepared before you go hiking, even on the official trail. There is a small emergency shelter at Elsay Lake, but it is always best to avoid needing it! Always make sure you understand the terrain and the route before you start your adventure.
