About the Elwick Racecourse Track
The Elwick Racecourse track is shaped a bit like an egg. Horses race around it in an anti-clockwise direction. There are seven different starting spots for races, depending on how long the race is. These spots are at 800m, 1000m, 1200m, 1600m, 2200m, and 2400m.
The Hobart Cup Starting Point
For the big Hobart Cup race, horses start at the 2200m mark. This starting point is to the left of where the crowd sits. This means you get to see the horses pass by right at the start of the race!
History of Elwick Racecourse
People have been racing horses at Elwick since the late 1800s. The Tasmanian Racing Club first leased the land in 1874. Soon after, they bought it, and Elwick quickly became a very popular place for horse racing.
Changes Over Time
For many years, until the early 1980s, there was even a drive-in cinema right inside the race track! People would watch movies from their cars. Later, the cinema was removed as fewer people went to drive-ins.
Modern Upgrades at Elwick
In 2004, the racecourse got a big upgrade. New tracks were built for other types of racing, like harness racing and greyhound racing. The old grandstand, which is a special historic building, was also updated. Now, there are lovely grass areas, public lounges, and dining spots for everyone to enjoy.
Racecourse Name Changes
The racecourse has had a few different names over the years. It was called Tattersall's Park, then UBET Park, and later Luxbet Park. After that, it became Tab Park Elwick. In July 2019, it got its current name: Ladbrokes Park Elwick.
