A Look at Emajagua's Past
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
Long ago, Puerto Rico was controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under the rules of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the U.S. This means it's a part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rights as a state.
Emajagua's Population Growth
In 1899, the United States government did a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 828 people lived in Emajagua barrio at that time. Over the years, the number of people living in Emajagua has grown a lot.
