What is the Emblem of Sudan?
An emblem is like a special picture or design that stands for a country, group, or family. Sudan's emblem is also known as its national coat of arms. It follows rules similar to those used for family crests.
What Does the Emblem Look Like?
The emblem features a large, proud secretary bird. This bird holds a shield in front of it. This shield is a copy of one used by a leader named Muhammad Ahmad in the 1800s.
There are two scrolls, or banners, on the emblem. The top scroll shows Sudan's national motto in Arabic: An-nasr lanā (النصر لنا). This means "Victory is ours." The bottom scroll says "Republic of the Sudan" in Arabic: Jumhūriyat as-Sūdān (جمهورية السودان).
This emblem is also used as the official seal for the president of Sudan. You can see it in gold on the president's flag, on their cars, and at their home.
Why Was the Secretary Bird Chosen?
The secretary bird was picked because it is a unique bird found in Sudan. It is a symbol of strength and pride. This bird is similar to the eagles and hawks seen in the emblems of other Arab countries. These birds often represent power and national identity.
A Look Back: History of Sudan's Emblems
Sudan has had different emblems throughout its history. Each one tells a part of the country's story.
Early Emblems of Sudan
When Sudan was ruled by both Britain and Egypt, the British governor-general used a special emblem. It had the words "GOVERNOR GENERAL OF THE SUDAN" surrounded by a wreath of leaves.
After Sudan became an independent country in 1956, it adopted a new emblem. This one showed a rhinoceros surrounded by two palm trees and olive branches. Below it, the name "Republic of the Sudan" was written. This emblem was used until 1970.
Later, between 1970 and 1985, Sudan used another emblem. It featured a different design before the current one was adopted in 1985.
