How Embry Hills Started
The Embry Family's Vision
Embry Hills got its name from three brothers: Jack, James, and Neal Embry. In the mid-1950s, these brothers bought a large piece of land, about 600 acres. This land was mostly farmland back then.
Building a Community
Starting in 1957, the Embry brothers began building homes. They built between 700 and 800 houses in the neighborhood. They also added apartment buildings. In 1958, the community got its own place to gather, called the Embry Hills Club.
Growth and Development
During the 1960s, a major highway, I-285, was built right through the area. This helped connect Embry Hills even more. In 1963, the first shopping area in Embry Hills was built. Soon after, the Embry National Bank opened, which is now known as United Community Bank.
A New Library for Learning
The DeKalb County Public Library recently opened a brand new library in Embry Hills. This new building replaced an older neighborhood library that had been open since 1990. It's a great place for kids and families to read and learn!
