History
How Emerson Got Its Name
Emerson was named after a man named Reuben Loggins Emerson. He was an important early settler in Columbia County. Reuben Emerson was a teacher, a merchant, and even a banker. He also owned a newspaper called The Columbia Banner. Plus, he was a state representative, which means he helped make laws for Arkansas.
In 1905, Reuben Emerson founded the town that now carries his name. On February 8, 2005, the town of Emerson celebrated its 100th birthday!
Where is Emerson?
Emerson is in the southern part of Columbia County. It is located along U.S. Route 79. The town is about 12 miles (19 km) south of Magnolia, which is the main city in the county. It's also about 9 miles (14 km) north of Haynesville, Louisiana.
Emerson is also about 68 miles (109 km) from Shreveport, Louisiana. If you wanted to visit Dallas, Texas, it would be about 205 miles (330 km) away.
The United States Census Bureau says that Emerson covers an area of about 1 square mile (2.6 square kilometers). All of this area is land, with no large bodies of water.

Annual Purple Hull Peas Festival
Since 1990, Emerson has hosted a special event every year. On the last Saturday of June, the town holds the Purple Hull Peas Festival. This festival is famous for its World Championship Rotary Tiller Race! It's a fun and unique event for the community.
Schools in Emerson
Students in Emerson attend public schools. These schools are part of the Emerson-Taylor-Bradley School District. This district used to be called the Emerson-Taylor School District. It was formed in 2004 when the Emerson School District and the Taylor School District joined together.
The schools in Emerson include Emerson Elementary School and Emerson High School. The sports teams at Emerson High are called the Emerson Pirates. They have been very successful! The Pirates have won five state championships in basketball. They have also won 25 state titles in track and field.
