Emily Marcia Armstrong (born May 6, 1986) is an American singer. She helped start the band Dead Sara. In September 2024, she became the new lead singer for Linkin Park. This happened after their long-time lead singer, Chester Bennington, passed away in 2017.
Early life
Emily Armstrong was born in Los Angeles. She started writing songs and playing guitar when she was 11 years old. By age 15, she began to sing. She decided to leave high school early. Emily knew she wanted to be in a rock band and was not interested in doing anything else.
In an interview from 2012, Armstrong shared that music was her main motivation. It was the one thing that kept her going in life.
Music career
Dead Sara band

In 2002, Emily Armstrong started playing music with guitarist Siouxsie Medley. They met through a friend and found they liked similar music. Both Emily and Siouxsie were inspired by bands like Nirvana and L7. They also liked folk and blues artists from the 1960s and 1970s. Classic rock bands such as Led Zeppelin and artists like Stevie Nicks also influenced them.
Their band was first called Epiphany. Dead Sara's very first show was in March 2005. It took place at a club in Los Angeles called The Mint. Besides singing, Emily also played the bass guitar for the band.
As a songwriter, Emily Armstrong was greatly influenced by folk rock music. She liked using special guitar tunings, like those used by Joni Mitchell. This helped create Dead Sara's unique sound. When she performed, artists like Iggy Pop and Janis Joplin inspired her.
Emily gained a lot of attention for her singing even before Dead Sara's first album came out. Singer Grace Slick said Emily had a "strong, urgent sound" in 2011. Emily also recorded or performed live with other artists. These included the Offspring, Beck, Demi Lovato, and Robby Krieger from the Doors.
Joining Linkin Park

On September 5, 2024, Linkin Park held a concert that was streamed live online. During this event, Emily Armstrong was introduced as the band's new co-lead singer. The livestream also featured a new song called "The Emptiness Machine." This song is the first single from Linkin Park's new album, From Zero, which came out on November 15, 2024.
Linkin Park's first public concert with Emily Armstrong was on September 11, 2024. It took place at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. A reviewer from the Los Angeles Times wrote that Emily can sing both soft melodies and powerful, "throat-ripping" vocals. These vocals fit well with Linkin Park's usual sound. Another review in Variety mentioned that the audience of about 17,000 people clearly approved of her joining the band. They showed their support with loud cheers that matched her powerful singing.
