About Emily King

Emily King was born in New York City in 1985. She grew up in a small apartment on the Lower East Side. Her parents, Marion Cowings and Kim Kalesti, were both singers. They often traveled for performances, taking Emily and her older brother with them.

At age 16, Emily left high school to focus on her music career. She started performing in restaurants and music venues around New York City. Some of these famous places included CBGB and The Bitter End.

Emily King signed her first record deal with J Records in 2004. She even appeared on Nas' album Street's Disciple that same year. Her first album, East Side Story, was released in August 2007. This album earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary R&B Album.

After leaving J Records in 2008, Emily decided to work on her own. She teamed up with producer Jeremy Most. She recorded her next music collection, an EP called Seven, right in her own home. It was released in July 2011. During this time, Emily toured a lot, both in the U.S. and other countries. She performed with many well-known artists like John Legend, Alicia Keys, and Maroon 5.

In 2012, Emily King received the Holly Prize from The Songwriters Hall of Fame. This award honors songwriters whose music is true, great, and original. Later that year, she was invited by Emeli Sandé to open for her concerts in the UK. She played sold-out shows, including one at The Royal Albert Hall in London.

Emily also worked with other musicians. In 2013, she sang on two songs for José James' album No Beginning No End. In 2014, she opened for Sara Bareilles on her "Little Black Dress" tour.

Albums and Collaborations

Emily King released her second studio album, The Switch, on June 26, 2015. She released it through her own music label, Making Music Records. The Wall Street Journal newspaper praised the album, saying it showed off Emily's unique voice.

In 2017, she signed with an independent label called ATO Records. With them, she released her third studio album, Scenery, on February 1, 2019.

Later in 2019, Emily King once again opened for Sara Bareilles on her "Amidst The Chaos Tour". Emily also helped write and sang "Being Human," the ending theme song for the Cartoon Network animated series Steven Universe Future. Another one of her songs, "Can't Hold Me," was also used in an episode of the show.

Her fourth studio album, Sides, was released on January 17, 2020. This album featured acoustic versions of her earlier songs. It also included a special appearance by Sara Bareilles on the song "Teach You." In response to important events in 2020, Emily released the song "See Me" in August.
