Emily King (born July 10, 1985) is a talented American singer and songwriter. She began her music journey in 2004. Her first album, East Side Story, came out in August 2007. Emily King has been nominated for several Grammy Awards, which are big awards in the music world.

About Emily King

Emily King was born in New York City in 1985. She grew up in a small apartment on the Lower East Side. Her parents, Marion Cowings and Kim Kalesti, were both singers. They often traveled for their performances and took Emily and her older brother with them.

When Emily was 16, she left high school after getting her GED. She wanted to focus on her music career. She started performing in restaurants and music spots around New York City, like CBGB and The Bitter End.

Music Career Highlights

Emily King signed her first record deal with J Records in 2004. She even appeared on Nas' album Street's Disciple that same year. Her first album, East Side Story, was released in August 2007. It was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Album.

After leaving her first record label in 2008, Emily continued to make music on her own. She worked with producer Jeremy Most. She recorded her next music collection, called Seven, at home. It was released in July 2011. During this time, Emily toured with many famous artists. These included Nas, John Legend, Alicia Keys, and Maroon 5.

In 2012, Emily King received the Holly Prize from The Songwriters Hall of Fame. This award celebrates songwriters whose music is true, great, and original. Emily's second studio album, The Switch, was released in June 2015. She released it through her own label, Making Music Records. The Wall Street Journal newspaper said the album showed off Emily's special voice.

In 2017, she signed with ATO Records. Her third studio album, Scenery, came out in February 2019. Later in 2019, she again opened for Sara Bareilles on her Amidst The Chaos Tour.

Emily King also helped create music for the Cartoon Network show Steven Universe Future. She co-wrote and sang "Being Human," the ending theme song. Her song "Can't Hold Me" was also used in an episode of the series.

Her fourth studio album, Sides, was released in January 2020. This album featured acoustic versions of her earlier songs. It included a special guest appearance by Sara Bareilles on the song "Teach You." In August 2020, Emily released the song "See Me." This song was nominated for Best R&B Performance at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards.

Emily King released her album Special Occasion in May 2023. This album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album in 2024.
