CBGB was a famous music nightclub in New York City. The letters "CBGB" stood for country, bluegrass, blues. Hilly Kristal opened the club in 1973.
Soon after opening, CBGB became a very important place. It was where many new wave and punk rock bands first became popular. Some of these famous bands included the Patti Smith Group, Blondie, and Talking Heads. From the early 1980s, CBGB was also well-known for hardcore punk music.

What Else Was at CBGB?
One building next to CBGB became the "CBGB Record Canteen". This was a shop where you could buy records and a small café. In the late 1980s, the Record Canteen changed. It became an art gallery and a second stage for performances. This new place was called "CB's 313 Gallery."
CB's 313 Gallery Music
Artists who played at CB's 313 Gallery often had a softer sound. They played music like acoustic rock, folk, jazz, or experimental music. On the other side of CBGB, there was a small café and bar in the mid-1990s. This café was famous for serving classic New York pizza.
When Did CBGB Close?
The original CBGB club closed its doors in October 2006. The very last concert held there was by the Patti Smith Group. After the club closed, "CBGB Radio" started in 2010. You could listen to it on the iHeartRadio platform.
CBGB's Historic Recognition
In 2013, the building where CBGB used to be, at 315 Bowery, became a historic landmark. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is part of the important Bowery Historic District.
