New Wave is a cool type of rock music. It became popular in the late 1970s and early 1980s. This music style got its start from the energetic punk rock movement.

What is New Wave Music?
New Wave music mixes rock with other fun styles. You can hear parts of punk rock, funk, disco, and ska in it. It kept the rebellious and lively feel of punk rock. But it was often smoother and less aggressive.
Sounds and Style
Many New Wave songs had deep lyrics. Yet, a lot of New Wave was also very poppy. It used simple melodies and catchy parts you could easily sing along to. Synthesizers were a big part of New Wave music. These electronic instruments gave the songs a unique, futuristic sound.
New Wave is a very broad term. This means artists had many different styles. Some played pure rock. Others made synthpop or music with a reggae feel.
Visuals and Fashion
New Wave was also known for its strong visual style. Artists loved to wear colourful and unique fashions. This made their music videos and concerts very exciting to watch.
How New Wave Became Popular
When MTV started in 1981, it showed many music videos. New Wave bands were often featured on MTV. This helped their music reach many more people. A famous New Wave video is Whip It by the band Devo.
