Emma Snowsill's Triathlon Journey
Emma Snowsill started her amazing career early. In 2000, when she was 19, she won the World Championship for her age group (16-20 years). She also won a gold medal at the Sydney Youth Olympic Festival in 2001. Because of her talent, she received a special scholarship from the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS). She was even named the best female triathlete for her age group in 2000.
Becoming a World Champion
In 2003, Emma became an ITU World Champion for the first time. This big win happened in Queenstown, New Zealand. The next year, in 2004, she won the ITU World Cup Championship. She ended that year ranked as the number one triathlete in the world.
Despite being the world's top-ranked triathlete, Emma was not chosen for the Australian team for the 2004 Athens Olympics. This was a tough moment for her.
More World Titles and Commonwealth Games Gold
In 2005, Emma won her second world title in Gamagori, Japan. This race was very challenging because the temperature was 35 °C (95 °F) and the air was very humid.
During 2005 and 2006, she won the Lifetime Fitness Triathlon in Minneapolis twice. She also won a gold medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. Emma then won another gold medal at the 2006 World ITU Championships in Lausanne. She finished 45 seconds ahead of another great triathlete, Vanessa Fernandes. This made Emma the first female triathlete to win three world titles!
Olympic Glory
In 2007, Vanessa Fernandes won her first world title, beating Emma by over a minute. But in 2008, Emma won the Mooloolaba World Cup, showing she was ready for the Olympics. Emma decided to skip the ITU World Championships that year. She wanted to focus all her energy on the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
During the Olympic triathlon event, Emma stayed with the leading athletes during the swimming and cycling parts. Then, during the running part, she pulled ahead of everyone. Emma won the gold medal with a time of 1 hour, 58 minutes, and 27 seconds. She was 1 minute and 7 seconds ahead of Vanessa Fernandes. Another Australian athlete, Emma Moffatt, won the bronze medal.
Missing the 2012 Olympics
Emma was not chosen for the Australian team for the London 2012 Olympic Triathlon. She tried to appeal this decision, but her appeal was turned down. Emma decided not to take her case further. She said she had to respect the decision and wished the selected athletes good luck.
Throughout her career, Emma won many major triathlons. These include the "Grand Slam" events in Chicago, Los Angeles, London, and New York. She also won many ITU World Cup events.
