Emmanuel Church, Bentley is a special parish church located in Bentley, West Midlands. It is part of the Church of England. A parish church serves a local community, offering a place for worship and gathering.
History of Emmanuel Church
Building of the church began in 1954. The main architect was Richard Twentyman, working with Lavender and Percy. The church was officially opened in 1956. This ceremony was led by Rt. Revd. Stretton Reeve, who was the Bishop of Lichfield.
The church was built to remember Alfred Ernest Owen. It has a strong structure made of brick over a concrete frame. The bell tower has interesting, uneven openings. Inside, the chancel (the area near the altar) and sanctuary are bright. They have tall, vertical windows that let in lots of light.
Experts have praised the church's design. A famous architectural historian named Pevsner said it was "more accommodating and much prettier" than earlier buildings by the same architects. Because of its special design, Historic England gave it a "Grade II" listing in March 2016. This means it is an important historical building that needs to be protected.
The Church Organ
Emmanuel Church has a beautiful pipe organ. It was made by Hawkins in 1956. A pipe organ is a large musical instrument. It makes sound by sending air through many pipes. You can find more details about this specific organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
