Club Career Highlights
Starting Out in Football
Emmanuel Eboué was born in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. He began his football journey at the ASEC Mimosas youth academy. This is a famous academy that helps young players become professionals.
In 2002, Eboué moved to KSK Beveren in Belgium. This club was linked to ASEC Mimosas. He played there for three seasons. His strong performances in Belgium caught the attention of scouts from Arsenal, a big club in England.
Playing for Arsenal
Joining the Gunners
Eboué joined Arsenal in 2004. His first game was in the FA Cup against Stoke City. At first, he wasn't a regular player for the main team. He mostly played for Arsenal's reserve team. However, he did play three games in Arsenal's winning 2004–05 FA Cup journey.
Breaking into the Team
In the 2005–06 season, Eboué started to play more for Arsenal. He scored his first goal for the club in a League Cup match against Sunderland. This was on 25 October 2005.
He went to play in the African Cup of Nations in January 2006. When he returned, he immediately became a key player. He started playing as a right back against Liverpool because another player, Lauren, was injured. Eboué kept his spot for the rest of the season.
Eboué played in important UEFA Champions League games against teams like Real Madrid and Juventus. Arsenal's manager, Arsène Wenger, was very impressed. He even compared Eboué to the famous Brazilian player Garrincha. Eboué was in the starting team for the 2006 UEFA Champions League Final.
Challenges and New Roles
Eboué started the 2006–07 season well. He was even named Arsenal Player of the Month for September. However, he got injured while playing for his country. He missed a lot of games because of ankle problems. He tried to come back several times but kept getting injured. In May 2007, Eboué signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal.
For the 2007–08 season, manager Arsène Wenger decided to move Eboué to play on the right wing. This was after Bacary Sagna joined the team as a right back. On 20 September 2008, Eboué scored his first Premier League goal against Bolton Wanderers. Arsenal won that game 3–1.
During the 2008–09 season, Eboué faced some criticism from fans after a few difficult games. He sometimes made mistakes, which led to some fans booing him. Despite this, he continued to play as a wing-forward or right back. He scored important goals in the FA Cup and against Blackburn Rovers.
In the 2009–10 season, he scored his first goal against Wigan Athletic. This was the same team against whom he had been booed the season before. He also scored in a UEFA Champions League match against Porto. Eboué said he wanted to stay at Arsenal and finish his contract. He signed another long-term contract with Arsenal at the end of 2010.
In April 2011, Eboué scored a powerful goal against Blackpool. This helped Arsenal's chances of winning the league title. However, in the next game against Liverpool, he gave away a penalty in the last minute. This meant Arsenal didn't win the game. At the end of the 2010–11 season, Eboué had played 27 games and scored one goal.
Moving to Galatasaray
New Beginnings in Turkey
At the start of the 2011–12 season, Eboué's future at Arsenal became unclear. He moved to the Turkish club Galatasaray on 16 August 2011. He signed a four-year contract. Eboué later said that manager Arsène Wenger told him he would not play much for Arsenal.
On 11 September 2011, Eboué played his first game for Galatasaray. He scored his first goal for the club on 3 December 2011 against Gençlerbirliği. This goal was the only one in a 1–0 win. He played 31 league games and helped Galatasaray win their first league title of his career.
Winning More Trophies
In his second season, Eboué helped Galatasaray win the 2012 Turkish Super Cup on 12 August 2012. They beat their rivals Fenerbahçe 3–2 in an exciting game.
In January 2013, his national teammate Didier Drogba joined Galatasaray. On 9 April 2013, Eboué scored a long-range goal in a Champions League game against Real Madrid. Galatasaray won that game 3–2, but lost overall. Eboué helped Galatasaray win the league title again. They beat Sivasspor 4–2 on 5 May, securing the club's 19th Turkish Super Lig title.
Later Years at Galatasaray
Eboué was not included in the main squad by the new coach, Cesare Prandelli, at the start of the 2014–15 season. He played with the U21 team for the whole season. His contract was not renewed, and Eboué left the club at the end of the season.
Time at Sunderland
On 9 March 2016, Eboué signed a short-term contract with Sunderland. However, he did not play any games for the club. On 31 March 2016, Eboué was banned from all football activities for one year. This was because he had not paid a former agent. Sunderland released him in April 2016.
After Professional Football
In July 2017, Eboué trained with a Hungarian team called Ferencváros. However, they could not agree on a contract. In October 2017, he tried to join a team in Northern Cyprus, but a medical test showed some blood issues, so the move did not happen.
In December 2017, Eboué was offered a job coaching the under-14 team at his old club, Galatasaray. This happened when their manager, Fatih Terim, learned about Eboué's personal challenges. Eboué has spoken about facing tough times after his football career.
International Career
Eboué first played for the Ivory Coast in 2004. He was usually a regular player in their defense. On 18 November 2009, Eboué scored his first goal for Ivory Coast in a 2–2 friendly game against Germany. He was chosen to be in the Ivory Coast squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
