The Rwanda national football team is a group of football players who represent Rwanda in international matches. They are also known as Amavubi, which means The Wasps in Kinyarwanda. The team is managed by the Rwandese Association Football Federation. They play their home games at the Stade Amahoro in Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda.

The team is part of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). This is the main football organization for African countries. They are also members of the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA). This group looks after football in East and Central Africa. Rwanda has never played in the FIFA World Cup. However, they did play in the Africa Cup of Nations once, in 2004.

History of Rwandan Football

Rwanda made history by playing in its first ever Africa Cup of Nations in 2004. This was a very exciting time for the team. In their first game, they lost 2–1 to Tunisia. But they quickly bounced back!

They earned their first point in the competition by drawing 1–1 with Guinea. Then, Rwanda won their final group match. They beat DR Congo 1–0. Even with this win, they didn't move on to the next round. This was because Guinea and Tunisia also drew their match.

Team Look and Nickname

Team Uniforms

In 2001, Rwanda changed its national flag. Because of this, the football team also changed the colors of their uniforms. Their home kit now has a yellow jersey, blue shorts, and green socks. For away games, they wear either all white or all blue.

Adidas has often made their uniforms since 2001. For a few years, from 2004 to 2009, L-sport was their uniform maker. In 2015, AMS, an Australian company, started providing their kits.

Team Nicknames

The official name for the team used by FIFA is RWA. This is a short way to say Rwanda. Other football groups like CAF and CECAFA also use RWA.

Locally, the team was sometimes called the RR. This stood for Repubulika y'u Rwanda or République du Rwanda, which are the country's official names. But the most common and popular name for the team is Amavubi. This means The Wasps, and it's a cool nickname!
