Empedrado covers an area of about 564.9 square kilometers. To give you an idea, that's roughly the size of a medium-sized city!
How Many People Live Here?
According to a census taken in 2002 by Chile's National Statistics Institute, Empedrado had 4,225 people living there. This included 2,222 men and 2,003 women.
Most of the people, about 2,499 (or 59.1%), lived in urban areas, which are like towns or cities. The rest, 1,726 people (or 40.9%), lived in rural areas, which are more like the countryside.
Interestingly, the population of Empedrado actually got a little smaller between 1992 and 2002. It went down by 7.2%, which means 329 fewer people lived there.
How Empedrado is Governed
Empedrado is a "commune," which is a type of local government area in Chile. It's like a district or a county in other countries.
Local Leadership: The Alcalde
The commune is managed by a municipal council. This council is led by an "alcalde," which is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen by the people in an election every four years. From 2008 to 2012, the alcalde of Empedrado was Gonzalo Tejos Perez.
Representing Empedrado in Government
Empedrado is part of a larger area for elections. This means that when people vote for national leaders, Empedrado is grouped with other nearby communes.
- In the Chamber of Deputies: This is like one of the houses of parliament. Empedrado is in the 38th electoral district. This district also includes towns like Curepto, Constitución, and San Clemente. The people representing this district in the Chamber of Deputies were Pablo Lorenzini and Pedro Pablo Alvarez-Salamanca.
- In the Senate: This is the other house of parliament. Empedrado is part of the 10th senatorial constituency, also known as Maule-North. The senators for this area were Juan Antonio Coloma Correa and Andrés Zaldívar Larraín.
