Endeavour River National Park facts for kids
The Endeavour River National Park is a special protected area located in Queensland, Australia. It's found just north of the town of Cooktown. This park helps protect the northern banks of the Endeavour River.
Both the river and the park get their names from Captain James Cook's famous ship, the HM Bark Endeavour. In 1770, Captain Cook's ship was damaged by coral on the Great Barrier Reef. They sailed into this river to repair the ship.

Exploring Endeavour River National Park
Most of the Endeavour River National Park can only be reached by boat. This makes it a quiet and untouched place. There are no special places for visitors like campgrounds or picnic areas. People are not allowed to camp there, which helps keep the park natural.
Size and Location
The park covers a large area of about 2,400 hectares (that's about 24 square kilometers!). It sits right next to the Cairns Marine Park and the amazing Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. This means it's part of a bigger network of protected areas.
What Habitats Does the Park Protect?
The Endeavour River National Park is home to many different types of natural environments, called habitats. These include:
- Coastal dunes, which are sandy hills near the ocean.
- Freshwater wetlands, which are areas of land covered by shallow water.
- The river estuary, where the river meets the sea.
- Thick mangrove forests, which are special trees that grow in salty water.
- Heathland, which is a type of open land with small shrubs.
- Tropical woodlands, which are forests with trees that like warm weather.
Protecting these different habitats helps many kinds of plants and animals live safely in the park.
