System | Circulatory system |
Endothelium is a special layer of cells. These cells line the inside of your blood vessels and lymphatic vessels. Think of them like the smooth wallpaper inside all the tubes that carry blood and other fluids around your body. They form a thin membrane that helps control what goes in and out of your blood.
These amazing cells are found throughout your entire circulatory system. This system includes your heart, arteries, veins, and tiny capillaries. In an adult human, all these endothelial cells together would weigh about 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds). They would also cover an area of about 7 square meters (75 square feet)! That's a lot of cells working hard.

What Does Endothelium Do?
Endothelial cells are super important for keeping your body healthy. They do much more than just line your vessels.
Controlling Blood Flow
One of their main jobs is to help control how blood flows. They can make blood vessels wider or narrower. This helps direct blood where it's needed most. For example, when you exercise, your muscles need more blood. Endothelial cells help open up the vessels to those muscles.
Allowing Substances to Pass Through
Endothelium acts like a gatekeeper. It decides which substances can pass from the blood into your body's tissues. It also controls what goes from the tissues back into the blood. This is how nutrients, oxygen, and waste products move around your body.
Preventing Blood Clots
These cells also play a big role in preventing blood clots. They release substances that keep blood flowing smoothly. If a blood vessel is injured, the endothelium helps start the clotting process. This stops you from losing too much blood.
Helping with Immunity
Endothelial cells are part of your body's defense system. They help white blood cells, which fight infections, move from the blood into areas where there is inflammation or infection.
Where Can You Find Endothelium?
You can find endothelium lining the inside of every single blood vessel in your body. This includes:
- Your heart: The inner lining of your heart is also made of endothelial cells.
- Arteries: These carry blood away from your heart.
- Veins: These carry blood back to your heart.
- Capillaries: These are the tiniest blood vessels where oxygen and nutrients are exchanged.
- Lymphatic vessels: These carry lymph, a fluid that helps with immunity.
Why Is Endothelium Important for Health?
When the endothelium is healthy, your blood vessels work well. But if these cells get damaged, it can lead to health problems. Things like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or smoking can hurt endothelial cells. This damage can make blood vessels stiff or narrow. It can also make it easier for harmful substances to build up. Keeping your endothelium healthy is key for a strong circulatory system and overall well-being.
