English is a small town located in Crawford County, Indiana, United States. It is the county seat, which means it's where the main government offices for the county are located. In 2020, about 685 people lived there. This makes it one of the smallest county seats in Indiana. Before it became a town, it was known as Hartford from 1839 to 1884.

History of English

The town of English was first planned in 1839 and was called Hartford. Later, in 1884, it officially became a town and was renamed English. This new name honored William Hayden English, who was an important politician from Indiana at that time. On December 28, 1893, English became the new county seat for Crawford County, taking over from Leavenworth.

The first part of the town was built where two small rivers, Bird Dog Creek and Brownville Creek, met the Blue River. English was a busy place in the early 1900s. Its population grew to over 800 people by 1950. However, the town's economy slowed down after that. This was partly because of floods that kept happening. Many businesses closed. Today, most people live on higher ground around where the original town was. A large area that used to be lived in is now the Lucas Oil Golf Course.

Between 1959 and 1990, English had six major floods. The town leaders decided that the only way to solve the flooding problem was to move the town. They bought about 160 acres (0.65 km2) of higher land. With help from the Lincoln Hills Development Corporation, a big part of the town was moved to this new, safer location.

Geography and Climate

English covers a total area of about 3.04 square miles (7.88 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

Climate in English

The weather in English can change a lot. Summers are usually hot and humid. Winters are very cold and often wet. According to climate experts, English used to have a climate with warm summers and cold winters. But because of climate change, it now has a humid subtropical climate. This means it has hot, humid summers and mild winters. Southern Indiana is in a special area where these two climate types meet. So, the local weather might not perfectly fit just one type.

Music Scene

The music in the English area is mostly Country or Bluegrass. There are often music festivals that celebrate these styles. In 2024, an alternative band called 'Faith In Humanity' recorded their second album, 'The Dark Wave,' in English. They were the first band to record a full studio album there. This happened even though they lived in a part of town that was affected by floods. While Country music is very popular, Punk and Synthwave music are also becoming important in the area.
