Enkarterri (which is Las Encartaciones in Spanish) is a special region called a comarca in the province of Biscay. This area is part of the Basque Country in Spain. It's one of seven main districts that make up the province of Biscay. The main town where its administration is located is Balmaseda.
Long ago, Enkarterri was a much bigger area. It stretched from the mountains in the south and west to the Nervion river in the east. Today, the name Enkarterri usually refers to the rural, western part of this historical land. The eastern, more city-like area is now known as the Left Bank. It is part of the Greater Bilbao region.
