A Look at Entrepeñas's Past
Early History and Kingdoms
During the Middle Ages, Entrepeñas was part of the Kingdom of León. The kings of León worked to bring more people to this area, including Sanabria. After Portugal became independent from the Kingdom of León in 1143, Entrepeñas faced challenges. Because of its location, it was often caught in fights between the Kingdoms of León and Portugal. These conflicts were about controlling the border. Things became more stable around the start of the 13th century.
Changes in Provinces
Later, in the modern era, Entrepeñas was one of the towns in the "Tierras del Conde de Benavente" provinces. However, in 1833, there was a big change in how provinces were organized. Entrepeñas then became part of the Province of Zamora. This province was within the Region of León. In 1834, Entrepeñas also joined the judicial district of Puebla de Sanabria.
Finally, around 1850, Entrepeñas officially joined with the municipality of Asturianos.
Important Buildings and Places
The two most important buildings in Entrepeñas are its church and its chapel.
The Parish Church
The main church is called the Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. Part of this church was damaged in a fire. However, it still has its beautiful Baroque style. You can see this in its round pillars and its southern doorway. This doorway has a special arch called a basket-handle arch. It is framed by pilasters (flat columns) and topped with a pediment (a triangular shape).
