Eoin S. Young (born June 9, 1939, in Cave, New Zealand – died September 5, 2014, in Christchurch New Zealand) was a famous New Zealand journalist and author. He was well-known for writing about motor sports, especially Formula 1 racing. For over 30 years, he wrote a popular column for Autocar magazine, starting in 1967.

Eoin Young: A Life in Motor Racing
From Bank to Racing
Eoin Young first worked in a bank in Timaru, New Zealand. He also wrote about motor sports for the Timaru Herald newspaper. In 1961, he moved to the United Kingdom.
He first worked with Denny Hulme, a New Zealand racing driver, for the Formula Junior series in Europe. Then, in 1962, Eoin became the secretary for Bruce McLaren, another famous New Zealand racing driver. He even helped write McLaren's column for Autosport magazine.
Working with Racing Legends
In 1964, Bruce McLaren started his own racing team called Bruce McLaren Racing Ltd. Eoin Young was made a director of this new company.
When McLaren's team moved up to Formula 1 racing in 1966, Eoin decided to go back to being a full-time journalist. His weekly Formula 1 column for Autocar magazine was called ‘From The Grid’. This column ran for 31 years! At its most popular, it was also printed in seven other magazines around the world.
A Prolific Writer
Eoin Young also wrote many books about motor racing. In 1971, he wrote a book about Bruce McLaren called McLaren: The Man and His Racing Team. In 1976, he worked with British Formula One driver James Hunt to write Against All Odds. This book told the story of Hunt's only Formula One championship win.
Later, in 2003, Eoin wrote Forza Amon!, a book about another New Zealand racing driver, Chris Amon. In 2007, he wrote Memories of the Bear, which was about Denny Hulme.
He wrote articles for many different magazines and websites. These included Cars for the Connoisseur (UK), F1 Racing (UK), Victory Lane (USA), NZ Classic Car (New Zealand), Autosprint (Italy), and Am Klassiek (the Netherlands). He also wrote for the online motor sport magazine pitpass.com.
Eoin Young returned to New Zealand. He became ill in July 2014 and passed away on September 5, 2014.
