History of Eola

Early Settlers and Naming Eola

Eola was first settled in 1844 by Joshua "Sheep" Shaw and his son, A. C. R. Shaw. They originally named the area Cincinnati. Joshua Shaw thought the place looked like Cincinnati, Ohio, where he used to live. He got his nickname because he was the first person to bring sheep to the Oregon Country by traveling the Oregon Trail in 1844.

Eola's Post Office and Name Change

A post office named Cincinnati was opened in 1851. It was the first stop on a long mail route that stretched 70 miles. In 1856, the Oregon Territorial Legislature officially changed the community's name to "Eola." The new name comes from Aeolus, who was the Greek god of the winds. The exact reason for this name change is still debated today. The Cincinnati post office was also renamed Eola. It operated until 1901 and then reopened from 1955 to 1965.

Schools in Eola Through the Years

The very first school in Eola, when it was still called Cincinnati, was built in 1853. The first teacher there was Miss Abigail J. Scott. She later became famous as Abigail Scott Duniway, a strong supporter of women's right to vote. The original school building later burned down. A new school was built in 1858 at Second and Mill streets. This school was used until 1937 and was known as the oldest schoolhouse still in use in Oregon at that time.

In 1937, a brand new school building was constructed. This was made possible with money from a Works Progress Administration grant. The Works Progress Administration was a program during the Great Depression that created jobs for people. This new school building served as a public school until 2003. Today, the building is used as a church.
