Erandio is a town and municipality located in northern Spain. It is part of the Biscay province, which is in the Basque Country. Erandio is also part of the Greater Bilbao area, a larger region around the city of Bilbao.

History of Erandio

In 1415, there was a conflict in the region called the War of the Bands. During this time, a royal governor ordered wheat from Biscay to be sent to another area called Asturias. This made the people of Biscay very angry, and they started a rebellion.

The people of Biscay were defeated in Erandio. About sixty men lost their lives in the battle. After this defeat, the wheat continued to be moved to Asturias.

Festivals and Celebrations

Erandio hosts several fun festivals throughout the year. These events bring the community together for celebrations.

Patron Saint Festivals

The main festivals in Erandio are called fiestas patronales, or patron saint festivals. These celebrations happen around the special day of a town's patron saint. A patron saint is like a special protector for a church or community.

The local public holiday in Erandio changes each year. It rotates between August 10, August 28, and the Corpus Christi day.

Here are some of the patron saint festivals:

  • June 11: Saint Barnabas in Fano / Faoeta.
  • June 13: Saint Anthony of Padua in Martiartu, Goierri.
  • June 29: Saint Peter in Kukularra.
  • July 3: Saint Tryphon in Arriaga.
  • July 10: Saint Christopher in Goierri.
  • Second half of July: Celebrations in Asua.
  • August 10: Saint Lawrence in Astrabudua.
  • August 15: Andra Maria (Our Lady Mary) in Erandio Goikoa. August 15 is a public holiday across Spain.
  • August 17 and 18: Saint Mammes in Santimami. This festival is held near the town border, with many events happening in the nearby town of Leioa.
  • August 29: Saint Augustine in Altzaga.
  • First week of September: Celebrations in Enekuri.
  • Third week of September: Celebrations in Lutxana.

Other Local Festivals

Erandio has also hosted Musikale, a street music festival. Music bands would march and play in the neighborhoods of Altzaga and Astrabudua. Musikale started in the nearby town of Leioa. For some years, it was held in several towns at once. However, by 2013, only Erandio continued to organize it.

Other popular festivals in September include:

  • A traditional rural Basque wedding recreation in Astrabudua.
  • Erandio Magikoa, an outdoor magic festival held in different neighborhoods.

Getting Around Erandio

Erandio is well-connected to other places. The Bilbao Airport is quite close to some parts of Erandio, like Asua and Erandio Goikoa, which are only about 3 kilometers away. Other areas, like Astrabudua, are a bit further, over 6 kilometers. There isn't a direct public bus from Erandio to the airport's passenger terminal. However, you can catch buses in nearby towns like Loiu and Bilbao.

Land Transport

Erandio is connected to many other towns in Biscay by Bizkaibus bus services. These buses can take you to places like Barakaldo, Bermeo, Bilbao, Derio, Getxo, Larrabetzu, Laukiz, Leioa, Mungia, and Muskiz.

The town also has Line 1 of the Bilbao metro. This metro line has three stations in Erandio: Lutxana, Erandio, and Astrabudua. You can also travel by Euskotren trains.

River Transport

Several smaller bridges cross the minor rivers in Erandio, such as the Asua River. However, there is only one large bridge over the Estuary of Bilbao. This estuary is formed by the Ibaizabal and Nervión rivers. The Rontegi bridge is only for cars and other motorized vehicles.

There are plans to build a new pedestrian bridge called All Iron Zubia. This bridge will connect Erandio with the town of Barakaldo, making it easier for people to walk between them.

In the past, Erandio was connected to Barakaldo by passenger boats over the estuary. These boats were first rowing boats, and later, in the 20th century, they became motorized boats known as gasolino. The regular boat service stopped in February 2024. This happened because of rising fuel prices and more people using land public transport. However, private boats can still be hired for fun trips along the estuary.
