Erik Huseklepp's Club Journey
Starting Out in Football
Erik Huseklepp began playing youth football for Fyllingen when he was 16. After two seasons with Vadmyra IL, where he played for both junior and senior teams, he returned to Fyllingen to play for their main team.
Playing for Brann
In 2004 and 2005, Huseklepp played in the Norwegian Second Division. On August 10, 2005, he joined Brann. He scored a goal just nineteen seconds into his first game as a starter. This helped him become a regular player for the team.
In 2006 and 2007, Erik often came on as a substitute. He was known for being a fast and skillful winger. In November 2007, he signed a new contract with Brann. That same year, Brann won the league championship!
Moving to Italy with Bari
In January 2011, Huseklepp moved to Italy to play for Serie A club Bari. He played 14 games and scored two goals. However, Bari was moved down to a lower league, and they had money problems. This meant Erik had to leave the club.
Time in England with Portsmouth
On August 16, 2011, Erik Huseklepp signed a three-year contract with Portsmouth, an English club in the Championship. He made his first appearance in a game against Bristol City. He scored his first goal for Portsmouth against Blackpool on September 24. He also scored two goals against Nottingham Forest in a 3–0 win.
Loan to Birmingham City
Portsmouth faced financial difficulties. They asked Huseklepp to join Birmingham City on loan to help the club. Erik agreed, even though he liked playing for Portsmouth. He joined Birmingham on February 23, 2012, and played there until the end of the season.
Coming Back to Brann
After his loan at Birmingham City ended, Erik Huseklepp returned to Portsmouth. However, Portsmouth was also moved down to a lower league. Many clubs in Norway wanted to sign him. Brann worked hard to get him back. On July 28, 2012, Brann announced that Erik would return to the club. He even changed his shirt number as part of a sponsorship deal.
Playing for Haugesund and Åsane
For the 2017 season, Huseklepp signed with Haugesund. In July 2017, he joined Åsane on loan. Åsane is a team in Norway's second-highest league. During his loan, he scored 6 goals in 12 matches. In November 2017, he signed a permanent contract with Åsane.
Final Return to Fyllingen
On January 7, 2019, Huseklepp went back to Fyllingen. This time, he was both a player and an assistant coach.
Erik Huseklepp's International Career
On August 12, 2009, Erik Huseklepp scored his first goal for the Norwegian national team. It was in a 4–0 win against Scotland. He was named "Man of the Match" in his first game as a starter for Norway. He was the first player from Bergen to score for the national team since 1963. He also scored the winning goal against Portugal in a 1–0 victory during the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying games.
After playing his 25th international match in October 2011, Erik received the "Gold Watch" award. This award is given by the Norwegian Football Association to players who reach 25 international games. He was the first player from Bergen to get this award since 1977. Erik played 36 games for Norway and scored seven goals.
