Erik Huseklepp's Club Journey
Starting Out in Football
Erik Huseklepp began his youth football career at Fyllingen when he was 16 years old. After playing two seasons for Vadmyra IL, where he played for both junior and senior teams, he returned to Fyllingen. This time, he joined their main senior team.
Playing for Brann
In 2004 and early 2005, Huseklepp played in the Norwegian Second Division. On August 10, 2005, he signed with Brann. He scored a goal just nineteen seconds into his first league match as a starter. After this amazing start, he became a regular player on the first team.
In 2006, Erik found it harder to get a starting spot. He started only six games in the Norwegian Premier League. In 2007, Brann's coach often used him as a player who came on later in the game. He would take on tired defenders. Huseklepp first said he would not sign a new contract. Many clubs wanted to sign him because he was known as a skillful winger. But in November 2007, he signed a new three-year contract with Brann. That year, his team became the league champions!
Time in Italy with Bari
In January 2011, Huseklepp moved to Serie A club Bari in Italy. He played 14 games for them and scored two goals. However, the club was moved down to Serie B. Because of money problems, Bari had to sell Huseklepp.
Playing in England: Portsmouth
On August 16, 2011, Huseklepp signed a three-year contract with the English club Portsmouth. This club plays in the Championship, which is the second-highest league in England. The transfer fee was reported to be about £1.5 million. He played his first game in a 0–0 draw against Bristol City. He came on as a substitute in the 87th minute.
He scored his first goal for Portsmouth against Blackpool on September 24. It was a winning goal scored in extra time! Three days later, he accidentally scored an own goal. This made Portsmouth lose 3–2 at home to Peterborough United. On November 5, he scored two goals against Nottingham Forest in a 3–0 win. On January 28, 2012, Huseklepp scored two more goals in a 3–0 victory against Peterborough United.
Loan to Birmingham City
Portsmouth was having financial problems. The club asked Huseklepp to join Birmingham City on loan to help with their money issues. Even though he liked playing for Portsmouth and its fans, he agreed. He joined Birmingham on February 23, 2012, until the end of the season. He played his first game for Birmingham a few days later. It was a 2–1 loss at home to Nottingham Forest.
Coming Back to Brann
After his loan at Birmingham ended, Huseklepp did not get a permanent deal there. He went back to Portsmouth, but his club was moved down to a lower league. Since Portsmouth was still having money troubles, Erik was linked with many clubs, mostly from Norway. Brann was very keen to sign him again.
On July 28, 2012, Brann announced that they had agreed to bring Huseklepp back. For the 2013 season, Huseklepp changed his shirt number to 23. This was part of a deal with a sponsor who helped pay for his return to Brann.
Later Career: Haugesund and Åsane
For the 2017 season, Huseklepp signed with Haugesund. In July 2017, he joined Åsane on loan. Åsane is a club in the Norwegian second-tier league. During his loan, he scored 6 goals in 12 matches. In November 2017, Huseklepp ended his contract with Haugesund. He then signed permanently with Åsane.
Return to Fyllingen as Player and Coach
On January 7, 2019, Huseklepp went back to Fyllingen. This time, he joined as both a player and an assistant coach.
International Career for Norway
On August 12, 2009, Huseklepp scored his first goal for the Norwegian national team. It was in the 60th minute of a 4–0 win against Scotland. He was named "Man of the Match" by viewers in his first game starting for the national team. Huseklepp was the first player from Bergen to score for the national team since 1963.
He scored the winning goal against Portugal in a 1–0 victory. This was during the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying matches. After playing his 25th international match against Cyprus in October 2011, Huseklepp received the Gold Watch. This award is given to players who reach 25 caps for Norway. He was the first player from Bergen to get this award since 1977. As of February 2013, he had played 33 games for Norway and scored seven goals.
Coaching Career
On January 5, 2022, Huseklepp became an assistant coach at Brann. He is part of the coaching team under manager Eirik Horneland.
