While he was with Bruce Springsteen's band, he played drums on the famous song "Born to Run".

Ernest is great at playing many kinds of music, including rock, rhythm and blues, soul, and jazz. He studied music and mixes different styles into his drumming. Even Max Weinberg, who became the drummer for the E Street Band after Ernest, said that Ernest's drumming on "Born to Run" was so unique that he couldn't copy it.

Besides being a drummer, Ernest Carter also plays the guitar and keyboards. He can even sing! In 2001, he released his own album called Temple of Boom. On this album, he sang and played all the instruments himself.

Early Life and Nickname

Ernest Carter was born and grew up in Asbury Park, New Jersey. When he was a teenager, he was very good at track and field sports. He also became a skilled drummer.

He got the nickname "Boom" in a funny way. One day, police were called to his house because someone thought they heard gunshots coming from his basement. When the police arrived, they found young Ernest just practicing his drums! His drumming was so loud, it sounded like "boom"!

Ernest was childhood friends with David Sancious. In the early 1970s, they moved to Richmond, Virginia. There, they worked as session musicians, which means they played instruments for other artists' recordings. They also played in a band called Cinnamon.

Playing with Bruce Springsteen

In February 1974, the drummer for the E Street Band, Vini Lopez, left the group. David Sancious helped Ernest Carter get an audition to join the band. Ernest tried out for the job at the home of Garry Tallent's parents.

Ernest's first show with the E Street Band was on February 23, 1974. It was at the Satellite Lounge in Cookstown, New Jersey. He played with Bruce Springsteen during the early part of the Born to Run tour.

In August 1974, Ernest recorded the drum part for the song "Born to Run" at the 914 Sound Studios. This was the only time his drumming appeared on a Bruce Springsteen album. Ernest's last show with the E Street Band was on August 14, 1974, at the Carlton Theater in Red Bank, New Jersey.

Forming the Band Tone

After leaving the E Street Band in August 1974, Ernest Carter and David Sancious started their own jazz fusion band. They called the band Tone. Gerald Carboy played bass guitar with them. Other musicians, like Patti Scialfa, also played with Tone at different times.

Tone signed a record deal with Epic Records. Their first album, Forest Of Feelings, came out in 1975. Another album, Transformation (The Speed of Love), followed in 1976. They also recorded a third album, Dance Of The Age Of Enlightenment, but it wasn't released until 2004 due to problems between record labels. Tone released one more album, True Stories, in 1978 before the band broke up.

Other Music Projects

In the late 1970s, Ernest Carter also played with several bands in the Jersey Shore area. One of these bands was Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes. He later played with the Lord Gunner Group, a rock band.

In 1978, Ernest toured with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. He even played with them on a German TV show called Rockpalast. During the 1980s, he performed and recorded with a blues band from the Jersey Shore called Billy Hector & The Fairlanes.

On August 14, 1987, Bruce Springsteen joined The Fairlanes as a special guest during a show at The Stone Pony in Asbury Park, New Jersey. They played a song called "Savin’ Up," which Bruce Springsteen wrote.

Later, Ernest moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. There, he worked with many other musicians, including John Lee Hooker and Clarence Clemons. He has also been the drummer for the house band at the BAM music award show, called the Bammies.
