Ernest Carter, born on September 7, 1952, is a talented American drummer. He is also known by his cool nickname, "Boom" Carter. He has played with many famous musicians, including Bruce Springsteen, David Sancious, and Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes. One of his most famous drumming performances was on Bruce Springsteen's hit song, "Born to Run".

Ernest Carter is a very skilled musician. He can play many types of music, like rock, rhythm and blues, soul, and jazz. He learned music formally and mixes different styles into his drumming. Even Max Weinberg, who became the drummer for the E Street Band after Ernest, said that Ernest's drumming on "Born to Run" was so unique he couldn't copy it! Besides drums, Ernest also plays guitar, keyboards, and sings. In 2001, he released his own album called Temple of Boom, where he played all the instruments and sang.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Ernest Carter grew up in Asbury Park, New Jersey. When he was a teenager, he was great at track and field sports. But he was also busy becoming an amazing drummer. He got his nickname "Boom" because his drumming was so loud! One time, police even came to his house because they thought they heard gunshots. It turned out it was just Ernest practicing his drums in the basement!

Ernest was childhood friends with David Sancious. In the early 1970s, they moved to Richmond, Virginia. There, they worked as session musicians, which means they played instruments for other artists' recordings. They also played in a band called Cinnamon.

Joining the E Street Band

In February 1974, the drummer for the E Street Band, Vini Lopez, left the group. David Sancious suggested Ernest Carter as the new drummer. Ernest tried out for the band at the home of Garry Tallent, another band member. His first show with the E Street Band was on February 23, 1974, in Cookstown, New Jersey.

Ernest played with Bruce Springsteen during the early part of the Born to Run tour. In August 1974, he recorded the drum part for the famous song "Born to Run" at 914 Sound Studios. This was his only time playing on a Bruce Springsteen album. His last show with the E Street Band was on August 14, 1974.

Forming the Band Tone

After leaving the E Street Band in August 1974, Ernest Carter and David Sancious started their own jazz fusion band called Tone. They were joined by Gerald Carboy on bass. Sometimes, other musicians like Patti Scialfa also played with them.

Tone signed a record deal and released their first album, Forest Of Feelings, in 1975. Their second album, Transformation (The Speed of Love), came out in 1976. They also recorded a third album, Dance Of The Age Of Enlightenment, but it wasn't released until 2004 due to some record company issues. Their last album, True Stories, was released in 1978 before the band broke up.

Other Musical Adventures

In the late 1970s, Ernest Carter played with several bands along the Jersey Shore. This included Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes. He also played with the Lord Gunner Group, a rock band. In 1978, Ernest toured with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and even appeared on a German TV show called Rockpalast.

During the 1980s, he performed and recorded with a blues band called Billy Hector & The Fairlanes. On August 14, 1987, Bruce Springsteen even joined The Fairlanes on stage for a performance! Later, Ernest moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. There, he worked with many other musicians, including John Lee Hooker and Clarence Clemons. He also played drums for the house band at the Bammies music award show.
